For those of us who spent our misguided youths in amusement arcades, chip shops and cafes and our misguided later years in pubs and clubs, Barcrest is name which probably needs very little introduction. The little Barcrest logo adorned the fruit machines we played and was always instantly recognisable.
Barcrest started out life as a fruit machine manufacturer in the UK. As well as some excellent land-based slot machines, Barcrest also develop great games for online casinos. They were acquired by Scientific Games in 2011, and were later joined by US giants, WMS. Since the takeover, Barcrest have continued to put out some excellent slots. Some of the most popular games that Barcrest has put out were the name Rainbow Riches. There are many games that wear this name. All of them have their unique quirks and styles. But the base is pretty much always the same. Furthermore, Barcrest was the first game developer to introduce 5 reel slots to the UK market, which was, until then, only accustomed to playing 3 reel slots. Some of Barcrest games feature the High Roller playing option, which allows players to select a smaller number of spins at a higher cost. Barcrest is the creator of the African-themed slot Africa Untamed. The brand has been around since its inception in Manchester, England in the 1960s. Barcrest originally made fruit machines for clubs, arcades and pubs, then moved on to online casinos.
Bet Victor, one of the casinos we recommend to players, offers a number of Barcrest online slots and it has a reputation for producing games of the highest quality. A brief history of Barcrest is probably in order here though and this company was formed as long ago as 1968 with a remit to provide technology to bingo halls and the like but it was also well prepared to adapt to the UK regulation that demanded slots contain an element of skill (you can read more about the history of the fruit machines here).
Throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s Barcrest continued to develop and innovate to become one of the UK’s biggest and most recognised suppliers of fruit machines. It also expanded into Europe to take advantage of deregulating markets there.
In 1998 Barcrest was acquired by the American gaming giant IGT who were looking to expand their operations into Europe and not long afterwards the company began to get involved in the design and development of online slots and other online casino games. Over the subsequent years it developed a number of well-received slots and this development process culminated in 2006 with the release of the still-popular Rainbow Riches, a title which has spawned a number of sequels and offshoots.
In 2011 Barcrest was acquired from IGT by another US company called Scientific Games who merged it with another organisation called The Global Draw. Both now operate under the SG Gaming brand but the Barcrest name lives on in it’s online slots.
SG Gaming has its headquarters in Manchester but employs more than 600 people nationwide.

Barcrest is now owned by Scientific Games, which continues to use the iconic brand for both live and online slots. This company was once the single biggest slot games maker in the UK. During the 1970’s through to the 1990’s it was difficult to walk into a pub in the UK without finding slots and other gaming machines supplied by Barcrest.
Formed in Ashton Under Lyme back in 1968. Along the way they went from 3 reel slots (fruit machines) through to the early 5 reel video slot games. Many of the best known games like Rainbow Riches, Monty’s Millions and later Ooh Aah Dracula came from Barcrest. They were bought out by IGT in 1998. This company kept their brand name, and eventually made the more modern titles available to an online audience. The later sale to Scientific Games in 2011 again saw the name and development centre being kept.
Today Barcrest continue to develop new titles and have moved much of their focus to making their top games compatible with mobile devices.
